What is Burnout?

Burnout is defined as the end state of long-term chronic stress.

 

What are some symptoms of burnout?

 

Feelings of extreme energy depletion

Exhaustion (both physically and mentally)

Disengagement

Increased mental distance from one’s job

Cynicism (when you always think the worst and have a hard time seeing the good in anyone)

Negativity

Disproportionate reactions to situations (big or small)

Decrease in feelings of personal accomplishment

Difficulty concentrating

Sleep or GI issues

Easily frustrated and/or quick tempered

Emotional Numbness

 

5 Things that you can do to set clear boundaries

 

Establish your Priorities

Take a mini-sabbatical

Use a designated Workspace at Home

Beware the Electronic Leash

Clearly and assertively communicate your boundaries

 

The Big Three

 

Carefully choose your boundaries

Communicate those boundaries

Stick to those boundaries

 

Call to Action:

 

Establish some clear boundaries around a period of 24 consecutive hours on the weekend where you do not do work for school.
